The Children’s Healing Center is bringing Good. Clean. Fun. to Southeast Michigan.
This spring, The McFate Group finished the construction of the 11,000-square-foot Children’s Healing Center in Ypsilanti Township. The Center is the second facility in the state that offers a safe and clean environment for kids and young adults with weakened immune systems to play year-round.
On June 24th, the Center had its grand opening in which Representative Debbie Dingell was an attendee. Instead of a typical ribbon-cutting ceremony, to honor the opening of the facility, young members ran through a paper chain and into the front door. The unconventional celebration remains symbolic of what the Children’s Healing Center represents: community, healing fun and innovative solutions.
Upon entering the Center, there’s a thorough screening process that includes testing for contagious illnesses and cleaning hands and shoes. There’s a designated hand-washing area in which children and their families can store outside belongings that also serves as a controlled access point to the playground to avoid contaminating the rest of the facility. The Center also uses HEPA (high efficiency particular air) filtration on all HVAC systems to keep the air as clean as possible.
Programmatic elements such as an Art Room, an Active Fitness space and an Exploratory Play area allow members of the Center to play, learn and create in an uncontaminated setting. The building also includes a large multipurpose room with a kitchenette, a meeting room that overlooks the playground, and office space with a view of Ford Lake. There is ample storage space throughout the facility for programming needs.
The first Children’s Healing Center opened in Grand Rapids in 2015. “From the moment we opened our doors in Grand Rapids, we knew we wanted to grow the center all the way across the state,” says Lorrie Beaumont, the Executive Director of the Children’s Healing Center in Southeast Michigan. “With world-class hospitals, double the population and a strong community spirit, the Ann Arbor area seemed like the ideal location for our next site.”
